Buildings in the Greenwood business district jut into the viewer's space while the skyline of Downtown Tulsa rises above. Soon after the city completed the 1-244 leg of the Inner Dispersal Loop (IDL), Herron climbed onto the highway bridge to take this photograph. because of the IDL and other urban renewal projects, the businesses and homes north of the expressway were gone.
"This vantage point showing Greenwood from above--a bird's eye view--would not have been possible without the expressway. But in great irony, the expressway is what cut the place in two. Expressways drive areas into bankruptcy and destroy the natural beauty of the place. That's what happened here.
"A well-dressed man strides down Black Wall Street, harkening back to a decade or two before when the place was bustling. Now it seems an extremely lonely place. But perhaps this man is the first in a new wave of possibilities, successful businesses, and a new future." --Gaylord Oscar Herron
