Julia Bracewell Folkard was born in South Kensington, London, in 1849, the daughter of a surgeon. As one of only thirty women accepted to study at the Royal Academy of London in the first decade that the institution admitted women students, she would have experienced significant challenges and limitations. In 1871, however, she won a silver medal in painting, and for the next two decades, her work frequently appeared at both the Royal Academy and at the Society of Women Artists in London. She was also featured in several books and news articles during this time, described in one as “that clever lady artist.” A 1889 article about Folkard in the periodical The Queen asserted that “her particular forte in art appears to lie in reading character, and that character, be it man, woman, or child, she can reproduce pictorially with an earnestness, truth, and dignity doing credit to her ever-improving natural talents.” Her work is included in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London, as well as the Royal College of Music and other United Kingdom museums and institutions.
