Rosa Bonheur created carefully detailed paintings of animals in the French countryside. France was becoming more industrialized, but in her work, Bonheur presented a traditional, rural identity of France. Instead of painting idealized or "perfect" versions of animals, however, Bonheur painted them as she saw them in the fields - naturally grimy and unkempt. Bonheur's work gained popular acclaim and commanded high prices. Financial success allowed her to live and work independently, which was exceedingly rare for a woman in the 19th century. Here, she paints sheep against a dramatic sky, giving them a powerful presence and sense of nobility.
