Mother Earth Laid Bare

From the Philbrook Collection.

This painting is from a group of Dust Bowl era works Houge called his Erosion series, depicting the damage caused by careless farming practices. Here, the plow looms as a menacing symbol of man's disruption of the soil and grasslands, leaving "mother earth" literally stripped bare.
